ABSTRACT
This chapter begins with a reminder (as if you needed it!) of the scope of bureaucracy in PCE, and how at times it can seem to overwhelm the sector and all who work in it. Despite often genuinely highlighting and promoting good practice, inspection is one of the key creators of the PCE paper mountain, and we consider why that is the case. Using manuals and guidelines for inspectors and examples of organisations in PCE who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and learning, the chapter then provides the ‘shining light or burning out’ guide to making inspection work for you. We conclude this chapter by presenting our thoughts on other, more creative approaches to developing and ensuring quality in teaching and learning, with the ‘people not paper manifesto’.
