ABSTRACT

This chapter summarises some features about the performance of Japanese manufacturing affiliates, and attempts to identify some of the differences between this performance and that of (a) the nearest equivalent plants of their parent and (b) their UK competitors. We would emphasise at the outset that we did not pursue this question in any depth, and many (indeed most) affiliates did not possess the information to enable these comparisons to be rigorously made; neither was it within our brief to approach the parent companies of the affiliates, nor indeed their UK competitors, for more details. Nevertheless, from the data provided, it is possible to derive a number of impressions and pointers, and indeed, offer some tentative conclusions.
