ABSTRACT

Some gifts are hard to de®ne and measure with exactness, yet we believe we recognise them when we see them. Social giftedness is one, in the sense of not only being able to take another's perspective but also to care about it. I've tried to ®nd out whether empathy as a part of social giftedness was related to high ability in other spheres or whether it was a matter of individual personality. From the time they were children, I'd regularly asked each person in detail about their emotional reactions to other people and situations. For most of the gifted, compared with the more average youngster, I found they showed a higher level of empathy and social awareness, and this remained true across the 35 years of the study.
