ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the context in which teaching and the teacher-student relationship take place. In trying to capture some of the common essence of classroom context inevitably some aspects will be overlooked in search of the more ubiquitous contexts. To aid this investigation a number of factors are dealt with separately in the chapter which are actually inseparable in reality. In that sense this review may appear to have a number of beginnings or perspectives on teaching contexts but my hope is that readers will be able to put the pieces together and construct the whole by reference to their own experience. The aim is to identify and describe the common factors that the literature suggests have the greatest effect on classroom and staffroom relationships.
