ABSTRACT

I see the green field and I believe that it is there before me. I look away, and I believe that I am now imaging it. I remember its shape, and I believe that it is rectangular. These are beliefs grounded in my experience: perceptual, selfconscious, and memorial. But I also believe something quite different: that if the spruce to my left is taller than the maple to my right, then the maple is shorter than the spruce.
