ABSTRACT
The 1970s in the United States closed the Vietnam Era and began a very difficult transition to new ways of thinking about military service. Understanding this transition, as well as the oil and Iranian hostage crises of the 1970s, is the necessary context for understanding the new paradigm of military service that would characterize U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in the last decade of the twentieth century and the first decade of the twentyfirst.
