A brief illustration of three-voice counterpoint in first species is given as Example 5-1, the numbers representing harmonic intervals. The analysis is done in four steps.
1. Identify the interval between the two upper voices and write it above the middle voice. 2. If the upper voices are crossed, indicate this crossing by an X.1
