ABSTRACT

Prior to the October Revolution of 1917, peasant women were involved in all farming and domestic chores. Girls began to help around the house and in the fields at an early age, and women typically did all kinds of jobs that were essential to provide for the family. Labor was divided along the gender lines, with the heaviest work of turning the soil assigned to men. But none of the work was divided into public employment or the domestic sphere; in the system of near-complete self-sufficiency, all work was done to shelter, feed and clothe the family.
