ABSTRACT

Drinking alcohol was always a part of traditional rural life in Russia; rural communities endorsed and participated in noisy and drunken festivities for various holidays, including religious celebrations. Nonetheless, many villagers condemned drunkenness if it sabotaged the wellbeing of a family, but they simultaneously treated someone who never drank with caution and suspicion.
