ABSTRACT
Academic freedom is a foundational concept in American higher education. The essence of “academic freedom” is that it embraces two types of autonomy: first, the liberty and independence of the faculty to think, teach, write and research, and, second, the independence of the institution itself for self-government, self-direction and self-determination.
