ABSTRACT
To embark on the study of higher education law requires some basic understanding of the American legal system. Knowledge of the sources of American law and the function and structure of the court system is a logical starting point. This chapter is designed to provide a better understanding of the philosophical and historical underpinnings of the American legal system as well as the mechanics of that system.
