ABSTRACT

With the term ‘material’ I allude to autonomous work done by the actress before the director’s intervention or the definitive montage made during rehearsals. For me the actress’s material consists of sequences of actions, scenes, walks, dance steps, ways of sitting down, of looking and using the arms, with the intention of building a particular kind of stage behaviour that is usually considered as the creation of a character. At Odin Teatret besides the word ‘material’, we use ‘score’, a term originally employed by Stanislavski: instead of musical notes, the score is composed of the actress’s physical and vocal actions.
