ABSTRACT
Portugal has traditionally been an importer of equipment and machinery. In the last decades, those imports supported industrial development in other manufacturing sectors like metal, textiles or footwear. However, recently Portugal has become a relevant exporter of those items, in niche areas. The large urban region of Porto has the largest concentration of actors in the sector. It represents a large number of direct and qualified jobs and its output value has been growing.
