ABSTRACT

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is the term used for practices, methods, systems, and devices that are aimed at providing and supporting communication for individuals with little or no functional natural speech. AAC has developed in the last 30 years as a predominantly applied discipline with a growing target population. AAC can be considered to be the use of nonstandard communication forms as an addition or a compensation for insufcient access to standard forms. Standard forms of communication are natural speech and writing. In more recent developments within society, electronic communication forms such as cell phone communication and electronic mail (email) have also acquired the status of standard communication.
