ABSTRACT

A good speller can look at a word, decide how to remember the various parts and once they have learned it, they can revisualise it and spell it correctly.

A poor speller will look at a word and probably try to remember it by looking at each individual letter. This is a time-consuming and inefficient way of learning to spell. Weak spellers have not acquired strategies to help them become good spellers. They need to be shown a range of strategies and encouraged to find which works best for them.
