ABSTRACT

Learning to appreciate others is an essential part of developing respect and empathy. This chapter explores human experience in different settings and suggests strategies to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions – both our own and those of children. Including a global dimension in learning (a significant part of which some term Education for Global Citizenship) does not only involve considering the lived experience of those in distant places; it also involves appreciating diversity in local communities and regions. Often the choices people make on a local level have a significant impact on distant and unknown others around the world. This chapter explores how to support children in understanding the implications of their choices:

The lives of children and young people are increasingly shaped by what happens in other parts of the world. Education for Global Citizenship [E4GC] gives them the knowledge, understanding, skills and values that they need if they are to participate fully in ensuring their own, and others’, well-being and to make a positive contribution, both locally and globally.
