ABSTRACT
The concept of self-determination refers to the right of a people to determine its own political destiny. This can be achieved through:
• Internal self-determination which gives peoples the right to participate in the conduct of their common affairs within a State and to pursue political, economic, social and cultural development without outside interference. Internal self-determination means that people living within a State have the right to have a government which represents all of them without any discrimination. However, it is uncertain whether the right to democratic governance is part of international law.
