ABSTRACT

This chapter covers three broad areas: subordination and coordination (see sections 4.1-4.10); linking sentences (see sections 4.11-4.15); and focusing and emphasising (see sections 4.16-4.19).

In Chapter 1, we looked at the simple sentence Paul plays football, and we analysed it in terms of the following sentence elements: Subject (S), verb (V) and Direct Object (DO):

S V DO Paul plays football.
