ABSTRACT

I. See How it Was Made If I made it, I must understand it. This idea, or something like it, seems to underlie, consciously or unconsciously, a good deal of educational practice. Get underneath or behind the product, see how it was made, and you will appreciate it, we tell the student, emphasizing the originating process, method, or procedure. See how the proof was arrived at, the performance conducted, the statue sculpted, the painting painted, the theory constructed and chosen. A product remains opaque until seen as embodiment of plan and skill, analyzed as artifact.
