ABSTRACT

This chapter describes basic methods to seek, grant, or deny permission, as well as how to state rules in Japanese. In order to seek approval for a wider range of situations, use te-forms. The te-form in this construction does not have to be an affirmative one. The chapter discusses the negative te-forms in order to seek exemption. When granting permission, they can of course repeat the target of approval. The politeness strategy of using mo can also be used. They can also use doozo instead. In order to flatly deny approval, use dame no good or ikenai it won't do. They can also use the combination of spell out what is being denied. Grammar points are followed by contextualized examples and exercises which allow students to reinforce and consolidate their learning.
