ABSTRACT

Synopsis of the essay on memory This chapter will be devoted to Reid’s important essays on memory and conception. The essay on memory includes an account of memory and of subjects related to memory, duration, time, and personal identity. Memory, like perception, is an unanalysable original operation of the mind. From memory we know what we remember, and we are able to distinguish the thing remembered from the act of remembrance. The thing remembered must be something past, which distinguishes memory from perception and consciousness. Moreover, memory yields belief and knowledge of what we remember.
