ABSTRACT

Physical science standards cover physics and chemistry disciplines of science. At the elementary grade levels, students focus on basic knowledge and skills, such as ability to identify the properties of objects and materials, describe relative position and motion of an object, and understand light, heat, electricity, and magnetism. At the secondary level, physical science concepts relate to understanding the interactions of matter, the in¬uence of forces and motion on objects, conservation and transfer of energy, atoms and chemical reactions. Physical science concepts can be challenging even for English-speaking students as they are considered more abstract compared with other areas of science. erefore, the material needs to be presented on a conceptual and concrete level to make the content comprehensible for ELLs. ere are a number of strategies that can be used to facilitate acquisition of physical science knowledge for ELLs, namely demonstrations, laboratory activities, concept maps, videos, etc.
