ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the question of what readers equired to do by way of helping those in needs. In other words, Judith Jarvis Thomson's starting point will lead them to the conclusion that readers have to limit our responsibility for those evils that readers could have prevented. Readers been looking at two contrasting positions, one which is put forward by Peter Singer and others with respect to global poverty, and one which is put forward by Thomson with respect to abortion. Looking at the proportion of any individual's income that is spent on donations to charitable causes. The chapter suggests that even the most generous only spend a tiny proportion of their wealth on international aid and development. It analyses this issue of global poverty and readers' responsibiilities to the poor. But their search to understand the principles involved will lead them to a further consideration of abortion and other related questions.
