ABSTRACT

This section now turns to examine the experience of another kind of student at Holt High School, the student of teaching, the preservice teacher (or teacher candidate). As part of the five-year certification program at Michigan State University, preservice teachers have three field experiences. As juniors, they spend two hours a week in the schools for one semester. Seniors are in the classroom four hours a week both semesters. The fifth year follows up with a year-long internship where preservice teachers are in schools four or five days a week for the year, with a set rhythm by which they increase and decrease their teaching responsibilities. See Table 11.1.
