ABSTRACT

In the last essay, Jan Simonson credits the PDS effort with an important role in shaping the culture of the Holt math department. For Jan, the culture of the Holt math department is important because it influences how teachers use professional development opportunities that come their way and indeed what they come to view as professional development opportunities. Rather than conceptualizing professional development as an activity done to teachers at a remove from their teaching, she suggests that the culture of the department orients teachers to see opportunities for professional growth in the day-to-day aspects of their teaching.
