ABSTRACT

Modern economic theories have not, on the whole, shown much interest in the study of economic structure, although many economic textbooks contain brief accounts of the organization of industry, the division of labour, the structure of enterprises, and so on. Economic sociology, on the other hand, is almost entirely concerned with problems of economic structure. The major fields of interest, which we shall examine in turn, have been the division of labour and occupational specialization, the property system, types of economy and structural changes (especially the process of industrialization), the structure of the industrial enterprise or factory, and industrial relations.
