ABSTRACT

Th is chapter introduces the fi rst story type in the Storytelling Project Model-stock stories. Here I defi ne stock stories and examine the functions they serve, illustrating how stock stories operate in everyday talk to legitimize the perspectives of the dominant white racial group in our society. Next I hone in on one example of an iconic stock story-the American Dream. I describe one of the activities we use in the Storytelling Project to critically analyze the American Dream and illustrate how stock stories can be explored through art-based activities.
