ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a broad introduction to systems theory as it applies to organizations. Systems theory is a way of thinking that helps us to reflect on the complexities of modern organizational life. The chapter offers a kind of ‘whistle-stop tour’, summarizing a range of systems-related theoretical approaches to organizations, including complexity and chaos theory. It also offers a brief look at decision-making in groups, including ‘groupthink’, the process through which groups make poor decisions through a lack of robust disagreement and dialogue. Those already conversant with a systems approach will find the material familiar, while the bibliography at the end of the book offers some leads for those who would like to pursue these ideas further. For the business professional, this chapter can shed some light on how effective group coaching can improve business performance.
