This chapter provides a general overview of the human resource management practices and processes used in the events industry as they relate to the effective staffing, training, management and motivation of employees and volunteers. This is particularly challenging for event managers, often because of an event’s vastness and the disjointed and ‘pulsating’ nature of its temporary organisation. Much of the mainstream human resource management literature covers conventional, more permanent organisations, so it generally fails to provide event managers and students with the necessary understanding of the topic in relation to the practical challenges of their industry.
