ABSTRACT

This chapter will highlight the specific nature of sports events and their major contribution to the development of events management as a worldwide industry. The issues of political influence, legacies, economic impact and how to bid for sporting events will also be discussed, as will the extent to which the event manager can prepare to deal with these. The motivation of attendees, the development of sponsorship and the role of television in sporting events will be reviewed. Particular practical emphasis will be placed on the management of participants, event safety in relation to challenges of crowd behaviour, and management of such issues as violence, racism, drugs and alcohol.
