ABSTRACT

Definitions of events often rely on management analysis and academic research with a ‘forprofit’ focus. However, a large proportion of UK events are carried out by and on behalf of the third sector of the economy and the public services. Such events, whilst often high budget and carried out by cash-rich organisations, often do not embody the same characteristics of planning, design and management as their for-profit sector counterparts. Building on the key aspects of events management that are applicable to events in all sectors of the economy, this chapter highlights the particular characteristics of third sector and public sector events and the different nature and style of managing their success.
