INTRODUCTORY PUZZLE: HOW EARL WARREN BECAME THE LAST LIBERAL CHIEF JUSTICE On the mo rning of June 13, 1968, Chief Justice Earl Warren met with President Lyndon Johnson to inform him that he intended to resign from the Supreme Court. There was nothing wrong with his health, but after sixteen years on the job Warren felt it was time to step aside and let a younger man take the reins. That was what the 77-year-old chief justice told the president, but it was only half the story.
