ABSTRACT

How do animals communicate, and what are the limits on animal communication? What separates us from them?

How do animals communicate?

I can’t say I’m that keen on insects. They have too many legs and move around far too quickly for their size. But I do like watching ants. Try this experiment with some friendly local ants; they’re pretty ubiquitous, even in towns. Find a place near where you know some ants pass, and put down something sweet; anything will do. Now sit back and watch. After a while, if you’re lucky, your little drop will be swarming with ants. Then you can watch a little trail of them, carrying food back to their nest.
