ABSTRACT

This chapter examines a number of the major theories on behaviour change. A theory is an organised, heuristic, coherent and systematic articulation of a set of statements related to significant questions that are communicated in a meaningful whole for the purpose of providing a generalisable form of understanding. Six major macro-theoretical and mid-range theoretical approaches are discussed:

passive;

behavioural learning;

communication;

cognitive;

self-regulation; and

stage or transtheoretical perspectives.
