ABSTRACT
In the ®rst chapter of this book we highlighted the controversy surrounding how infant sleep should best be handled. This is an area that provokes much passion. Visit any internet parenting site and examine their `bulletin board' or chat area on the topic of infant sleep, and you will ®nd yourself in the midst of a pitched battle. The primary opponents in this battle are those who follow the recommendations of behaviourally oriented sleep experts, such as Dr Richard Ferber, and those who follow the recommendations of the Attachment Parenting movement leaders, such as `Dr Bill' Sears. Below I have copied two sample posts representing these different views (I avoided the most vitriolic examples, where parents on each side insult the others.
