ABSTRACT

Each part of this book has been sent out for review, as far as practicable, to participants or close observers, and as the comments have returned and the sections have been refined we have come to realise that the project has changed its orientation. Where at the outset we expected we might find a range of processes and procedures that could be collated and compared, what we have come to conclude is that we have marshalled an account of individual endeavours in the pursuit of innovative architecture. The procedures with which they are associated depend for their efficacy on their being cared for by those who have created them, or adopted them. Where that caretaking ceases, the procedures lapse into quiescence.
