ABSTRACT

The images of psychologist, psychotherapist and psychiatrist have always been fused. Though annoying to psychologists, this is not entirely unfounded since Psychology has long been intimately involved with psychopathology. Many of its concepts, theories and tests (especially those relating to personality) originated in this area, while Psychological theories have frequently been applied in therapeutic contexts. In this chapter I will first consider some of the questions raised by historical studies and the nature of Psychology’s involvements with psychopathology and then turn to Psychoanalysis and the rise of Counselling.
