ABSTRACT
Language is the hardest of Psychological topics on which to write a coherent brief account. Language researchers approach it with varied agendas and assumptions, while it often forces its attention on psychologists concerned with other topics. It is, moreover, the most multi-disciplinary of subjects; linguistics itself, philosophy, anthropology, sociology, literary criticism, neurology and psychiatry, for instance, all have their legitimate interests (see Table 20.1).
