ABSTRACT

Instruction or ‘procedural’ texts tell us how to do something. Their chronological step-bystep organization makes them a sympathetic genre for young children.

FEATURES OF INSTRUCTION TEXTS

Instruction texts usually begin with the statement of a general aim and then list materials or ingredients to be used. Then a sequence or steps are set out and these may be numbered, identified by a letter or presented in bullet points. Illustrations can help us identify the genre of a text. So in the case of an instruction text each step may be accompanied by a clarifying diagram or picture.
