ABSTRACT

Not so very long ago when ‘children’s reference texts’ were mentioned, rather uninviting, traditional looking dictionaries and predictable, formulaic entries in encyclopedias came to mind. This picture is very far from the case today. Currently texts in the reference ‘stable’ – dictionaries, thesauruses, atlases and encyclopedias – are full of colour and interest and carefully designed. The best are valuable aids to children’s research, learning and writing in every lesson.
