ABSTRACT

Xenophobia literally is the fear and distrust displayed towards strangers in

general and foreigners especially. Its origins are in the Greek words xeno

(stranger, foreigner) and phobia (fear). It is typically used to describe hostility

towards outsiders, those who are different. There is a close connection with

some of the more extreme versions of nationalism and ethnocentrism and it

is often linked to isolationist and protectionist policies (see Protectionism).
