ABSTRACT

The Zapatista Movement is a democratic popular movement of resistance

against neo-liberal globalization (see Neo-liberalism) and globalism in

Mexico. It had its origins in a rebellion in the Mexican state of Chiapas in

1994. The residents of Chiapas, mostly people of indigenous heritage, found

themselves increasingly economically marginalized as a result of neo-liberal

policies such as those epitomized by the North American Free Trade Agree-

ment (NAFTA).
