ABSTRACT

The focus of this chapter is on historic house museums. It begins first by reviewing the core purpose of various organizations across the world which are entrusted with the task of promoting the conservation and public use of historic houses. Next, numerous classifications of historic houses are presented. Specific challenges to the successful and sustainable use of historic museums are later discussed. An overview of current research focus is also informed. This is followed by an illustration of the marketing strategies employed by historic houses situated in four different countries: United States, United Kingdom, Switzerland, and India. The chapter concludes with a discursive summary using the SSHTM lens.
