ABSTRACT

Adaptive use of old buildings is one way that cultural and historical elements are appropriated by the leisure and tourism industry. As urban conservation sites (Chang 1997), heritage hotels and resorts have become important cultural, historical, and ethnic symbols of unique ethnic environments. The heritage hotel concept also serves as an important mechanism to facilitate preservation and restoration of unique buildings. Also, heritage hotels are now a part of the ‘International Hotels Environment Initiative’ which aims to address some of the sustainability inspired issues such as eco-efficiency, cultural management, ecolabels, and best practice guidelines.
