ABSTRACT

In the preface to this text, extant review of existing literature informed a preliminary discussion with some graduate students and academicians at a southwestern university in the United States on the use of the term ‘sustainable development of tourism.’ This provided some guidance as to the focus of this chapter. Extant literature demonstrates that defining sustainability and sustainable development is not an easy task. A complete understanding of the discourse can only be possible if one examines these concepts from their early stages.
