ABSTRACT

Introduction The purpose of this chapter is to focus more specifically on provision for religious education through providing an historical and contemporary account of how provision for RE has evolved in England and Wales. This will make reference to the Education Acts involved, the role of Agreed Syllabuses and Standing Advisory Councils for Religious Education (SACREs) with regard to local determination and the burgeoning influence of government agencies from the 1990s onwards. It will conclude by discussing the cast of mind of RE teachers and the importance of taking account of the way in which pedagogy in society has influenced attitudes to religious education and the pedagogical issues that this has raised with respect to educational thinking and classroom practice.
