ABSTRACT

This chapter considers threads of teaching which we will pull through the eye of the curriculum needle from birth to eight years. We will thread through pattern, understanding number, number operations and problem solving. Other curriculum areas can be considered in the same way but require separate analysis. The learning goals are based on those of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum Guidance (DfES 2008) and the Primary Framework for Mathematics (DfES 2006). The mathematical curriculum for primary schools will change from September 2011. For the purpose of this chapter the current curriculum is referred to and the same principle of looking forward to ensure continuity of progression can be applied whatever the curriculum. The Early Years Foundation Stage (DfES 2008) curriculum guidance is divided between ‘Development Matters’ and other sections ‘Look, listen and note’, ‘Effective practice’, and ‘Planning and resourcing’.
