ABSTRACT

Along with the principal films you will also need to study one or two further films but in less depth.

Some suggestions for supplemental films: Jules et Jim (Truffaut, 1962) to develop the study of the French New Wave

Festen (Vinternberg, 1998) which provides the opportunity to analyse the concept of New Wave cinema in more recent developments (there is more information on Festen on the companion website)

Schuzou River (Ye Lou, China, 2000) to develop the study of East Asian New Wave

This chapter introduces definitions of New Wave cinema which can be applied across different films and periods. The emphasis is on a comparative approach, developing an argument about what constitutes a new wave and the similarities and differences of films across movements.
