Pre-cinema developments There are many points in history that could be identified as the key moment that led directly to the evolution of cinema, from the invention of the camera obscura during the Renaissance (though its origins go back to the Ancient Greeks), through to the invention of the Fantasmagorie by Belgian Étienne Gaspar Robert in 1798.
