ABSTRACT

SCIENCE journalists are often advised that analogies can beused to help readers understand unfamiliarmaterial (Funkhouser&Maccoby, 1971, 1973). Scientists themselves make extensive use ofanalogies both in explaining science and in the discovery process of science itself (Dreistadt, 1968; Kaufman, 1980; Koestler, 1964); so, it seems natural that persons learning about science would also find analo· gies helpful.
